Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that the Connecticut Development Authority (CDA) Board of Directors approved more than $1 million in direct loans that will allow companies in Southington and New Britain to create and retain jobs.

“Small businesses are an important driver of job creation in Connecticut and we are pleased we can help employers committed to growing our economy,” the Governor said. “The CDA has been a vital partner in their success.”

Located in Southington, Apple Valley Woodworks manufactures cabinets for residential kitchens as well as commercial facilities. A loan for $750,000 will allow the company to install new equipment and software that will reduce both production costs and turn around times. Apple Valley Woodworks is currently one of Southington’s largest employers with 91 full-time employees. This direct loan from the CDA is being combined with additional financing from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and will allow the company to retain those jobs, and increase that number to around 100.

Connecticut Valley Bindery is a 25-year-old company in New Britain that provides a variety of finishing services to the printing industry. The 34 full-time employees specialize in sorting, collating, cutting, folding, drilling, stitching, binding and mailing. A direct loan for $296,000 from the CDA will be used to buy machinery and equipment that is expected to increase productivity and revenues.

Since January, the CDA has approved approximately $26 million in financing to small businesses across the state, helping to retain and create over 2,500 jobs.

The Connecticut Development Authority is a member of the state’s economic development team, stimulating investment in commercial and industrial businesses and retaining and creating jobs that contribute to the state’s economy, technology base, intellectual capital and infrastructure.
